Researcher
Email: emily.martin@firelight.ca
Location: Saugeen Ojibway Nation Territory/Toronto Office

Emily is a euro-Canadian settler with Swiss Alsatian heritage raised on the Haldimand Tract, and is grateful to live today in the Territory of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation. She is an intermediate researcher with the Firelight Group supporting the IBA and Socio-Economic Research teams.

She completed her MA through the University of Guelph in partnership with the Little Salmon/Carmacks First Nation (LS/CFN) on the topic of free, prior and informed consent (FPIC) in the context of mining in LS/CFN Territory and the Yukon more generally. She also holds a BA in Environmental Governance supported by a field semester with the Haida Gwaii Institute which focused on the Haida Nation’s relationships to forestry and Parks Canada.

Over the last 10 years, Emily’s education and work has been deeply focused on FPIC and the duty to consult and accommodate in the context of resource development, governance, and land/water relationships. Emily has served as a consultation advisor to the Yukon Government’s mining regulator, worked as an independent consultant for First Nation and Crown government clients, and as a Manager of both development and conservation files for the Saugeen Ojibway Nation.

Emily loves live music, gathering people together, learning about plants, and lake-swimming as much of the year as possible!
