Experience

Etienne (he/him) is an Intermediate Researcher with Firelight Indigenous Knowledge Research team. He holds a MSc in Integrated Water Resources Management from McGill University and conducted his research in Eeyou Istchee (known as James Bay, QC) to better integrate community members’ knowledge into watershed management practices. One of Etienne’s milestone project’s at Firelight was focusing on the revitalization of Indigenous water governance laws, using community-based research project to identify key teachings and better integrate them to existing governance models. Etienne enjoys facilitating workshops and mapping interviews with knowledge holders – creating pathways for them to convey their life experience. Etienne has experience in environmental impact assessments, worked with different level of governments to improve Indigenous sovereignty, and supports the Firelight Ecology team on community-based research projects.

Etienne lives in c̓uumaʕas (known as Port Alberni BC), the unceeded territories of the c̓išaaʔatḥ and Hupačasath First Nations. Aside from working in natural resources governance, Etienne is also a wilderness therapy guide and has led ocean canoe expeditions in the Tongass National Forest, connecting Alaskan youth with their natural environment and supporting them on their personal healing journey.
