Experience

Jonathan (he/him) is a Senior Researcher with the Indigenous Knowledge Research team, where his primary responsibilities are community-based work, TUS data analysis, and writing. His doctoral work with Nak’azdli Whut’en explored the ways community-led land use research challenges the assumptions and power asymmetries of past approaches to traditional knowledge and use studies to better express local stories, histories, and knowledge of the land in regulatory and planning contexts.

Jonathan has worked on coastal tugboats in the Salish Sea, has taught at Royal Roads and Emily Carr universities, and has conducted cultural-geographic research in remote communities in every province and territory in Canada. His previous work has included Indigenous Guardians program development, design and implementation of environmental monitoring and harvest reporting tools, and TUS research to inform Indigenous land and marine use planning. He lives with his wife and their two young boys on the traditional territory of the ɬəʔamɛn (Tla’amin) Nation, where they spend as much time as possible in the forest and the water.
