Kalene (she/her) is a Research Specialist for the Ecology team at Firelight. A settler to Treaty 6, Kalene lives, works, and plays in Camrose, Alberta. Also known as asiniskaw sipisis, the Camrose area has many connections to the Maskwacis Nêhiyawak, Niitsitapi, Nakoda, and Tsuut'ina Nations, the Métis, and other Indigenous peoples.
Kalene appreciates any and all time she is able to spend in community or out on the land learning directly from knowledge holders and community partners. From species specific management to landscape monitoring, Kalene’s work often involves the braiding together of Indigenous Ecological Knowledge and western science to better inform management, decision-making, and foster a greater overall appreciation of the natural world.
Kalene's thesis research at the University of Alberta’s Applied Conservation Ecology Lab focused on estimating a habitat supply-based carrying capacity for wood bison.
