What We Do

The Stewardship team’s work applies to a range of contexts including policy development, protection of culturally important species and species at risk, land and marine-based conservation planning, the development of Indigenous community-led monitoring programs and Indigenous Guardian Programs, environmental impact assessment and other regulatory processes.

We carry out our work by supporting the gathering, analysis and sharing of technical information, including community-held knowledge and wisdom regarding governance and human-nature relationships. We facilitate collaborative projects made up of multi-disciplinary teams to support planning and implementation efforts that strategically position Nations as informed decision makers in the face of economic development pressures. We help Nations visualize, communicate and achieve their own preferred development outcomes.

Experience

Our team includes experienced professionals in land use and ecological planning, forest management and community engagement. Our work includes, but is not limited to the following areas:

  • Territorial, community, and marine stewardship planning;

  • Forest certification (i.e., FSC®);

  • Strategic planning;

  • Ecological research (i.e. baseline data collection and monitoring)

  • UNDRIP and FPIC implementation;

  • Meeting and event facilitation;

  • Project management and coordination;

  • + more!

We are committed to upholding the legal orders and protocols of Indigenous Nations. We believe that Indigenous governments and organizations ought to have access and authority over the application of scientific methods used to monitor, manage and mitigate human impacts on the environment.

We prioritize working with Indigenous Knowledge Holders, Leaders and program administrators to develop data collection techniques and produce valued information through technical analysis that is informed and guided by customary laws and protocols. We respect the codes of conduct of our professional associations and continue to advocate for full recognition of Indigenous rights, responsibilities and knowledge systems.

Training

We provide training and on-going support in planning and research methods, proposal development, project management and coordination for Nations to conduct baseline inventories that reflect community values and priorities.

We also support the development of community-led monitoring programs that use values, indicators and ecological thresholds that respect community protocols for looking after the lands and waters.
