Mathew (he/him)holds a BSc in Geography and an MA in political ecology. Mathew’s masters research in political ecology investigated the causes of social conflict linked to resource extraction in First Nations communities. This work focused on the inclusion of Treaty 8 First Nations’ authority and knowledge in oil and gas consultation and decision-making processes, as well as the potential for alternative governance models to address community interests and concerns. Before joining Firelight, Mathew worked in wildfire management and prevention, and held a research position related to water governance and unconventional energy development through the Canadian Water Network and University of Victoria.
