Firelight Senior Researcher Dr. Jonaki Bhattacharyya will deliver a keynote speech as part of the International Society for Equitation Science’s annual conference taking place August 19-21, 2019 at the University of Guelph. Jonaki will be describing some insights and experiences from the past 13 years of her work with Tsilqhot’in colleagues in the interior of British Columbia, researching free-ranging horses and their relationships with the land, ecosystems and local communities. In her talk, she will highlight the horses’ unique role in local culture and politics, and demonstrate that science and Indigenous knowledge are both important to inform management while conserving local cultures and landscapes.
